The Dead Sea Squirrels

Our family was excited to visit the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit that was coming to town all the way from Israel. These ancient copies of the Old Testament provide evidence that our Bible has remained accurate over the centuries. Our nephew Daniel was so elated about this outing that he told his schoolmates, "Our family is going to see ‘the dead sea squirrels!'" We all laughed when we heard his misquote. His little ears had turned a word he had never heard(scrolls) into a word he did know(squirrels). And in his childlike enthusiasm, he also knew that the family was going to see something wonderful!

Daniel's excitement underscores an important spiritual aspect of parenting. Values are transmitted to our children not only by what we say but by the emotions we convey. Both content and heartfelt appreciation for God's Word can be communicated to children in a variety of ways(Deut.6:4-9), including what they overhear in our conversation with others.

Young children may not initially understand each spiritual idea we discuss, but they can catch the importance we place on it. Children pick up on spiritual values and grow in understanding as we express reverence and excitement about the Word of God. - Dennis Fisher 

우리 가족은 그 먼 이스라엘로부터 우리 마을까지 와서 열리는 사해 두루마리 사본 전시회를 방문하게 되어서 흥분해 있었습니다. 이 고대의 구약사본들은 우리의 성경이 오랜 세월 동안 변하지 않고 정확하게 전해졌다는 증거를 제시해 줍니다. 우리 조카 다니엘은 이번 일로 몹시 들떠서 학교 친구들에게 다음과 같이 말했습니다. "우리 식구들은 ‘사해 다람쥐’를 보러 간다!" 우리들은 그가 말을 잘못 전하는 것을 보고 한참 웃었습니다. 그 어린 귀에는 아직 들어 보지 못한 말(두루마리:scrolls)이 그가 알고 있는 말(다람쥐:squirrels)로 변했던 것입니다. 뿐만 아니라 그의 천진난만한 기대감 속에서 그는 온 집안이 무엇인가 특별한 것을 보러 간다는 것을 알고 있었습니다.

다니엘의 들뜬 마음은 영적인 차원에서의 부모 역할에 대한 중요한 의미를 부여하고 있습니다. 우리의 말을 통해서뿐만 아니라, 우리가 보여주는 감정을 통해서도 아이들에게 가치관이 전달된다는 것입니다. 하나님 말씀에 대한 만족과 가슴에서 우러나오는 감사는 그들이 우리들과 다른 사람들과의 대화를 통하여 듣는 것을 비롯해서 여러 가지 방법으로 아이들에게 전달이 될 수 있습니다(신6:4-9).

처음에는 어린아이들이 우리들의 대화 속에 있는 영적인 내용들을 다 이해하지 못할지 모르지만 우리가 중요하게 생각하는 것은 느낄 수 있습니다. 아이들은 우리가 하나님 말씀에 대한 경외와 감격을 표현할 때 영적인 가치들을 알게 되며 그것들을 점점 더 깊이 이해하게 될 것입니다. 

Lord, give us wisdom to provide
The proper atmosphere
To lead our children in Your ways
By what they see and hear. - Sper 

우리 자녀들이 듣고 보는 것을 통하여
당신의 길로 인도될 수 있도록
주여, 우리들에게 적절한 환경을
제공할 수 있는 지혜를 주소서 

Train up a child in the way he should go-but be sure you go that way yourself. 

아이들이 가야 할 길로 가도록 훈련시켜라.
그러나 당신도 그 길로 가야 한다는 것을 명심하라. 

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

[4] Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.
[5] Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
[6] These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.
[7] Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
[8] Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.
[9] Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

신명기 6:4-9

[4] 이스라엘아 들으라 우리 하나님 여호와는 오직 하나인 여호와시니
[5] 너는 마음을 다하고 성품을 다하고 힘을 다하여 네 하나님 여호와를 사랑하라
[6] 오늘날 내가 네게 명하는 이 말씀을 너는 마음에 새기고
[7] 네 자녀에게 부지런히 가르치며 집에 앉았을 때에든지 길에 행할 때에든지 누웠을 때에든지 일어날 때에든지 이 말씀을 강론할 것이며
[8] 너는 또 그것을 네 손목에 매어 기호를 삼으며 네 미간에 붙여 표를 삼고
[9] 또 네 집 문설주와 바깥 문에 기록할지니라
